Cross-Party Group on Tackling Islamophobia

The purpose of the Group is to bring together elected members from all political parties, agencies and individuals working on the issue of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred in order to explore the nature and extent of Islamophobia in Scotland and how it can be challenged and overcome. The group recognises that the issue of Islamophobia presents specific challenges that have received relatively little attention in the Scottish context. It will seek to monitor the issue of Islamophobia in Scotland and develop strategies for tackling it. The group’s main purpose will be to inform Parliament of the work that it does in the hope of increasing awareness about racism and Islamophobia in Scotland and to ensure such matters are engaged with where necessary in policy and practice.

Public Inquiry into Islamophobia in Scotland

The Cross Party Group (CPG) on Tackling Islamophobia is seeking written evidence about Islamophobia in Scotland and will be holding verbal evidence sessions and outreach events across the country. The CPG wants to hear from individuals, employers and organisations about experiences of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred; we are also interested in hearing views about what steps should be taken to tackle Islamophobia in Scotland.

Media Guidelines: Reporting on Muslims and Islam

A major new report with media guidelines for reporting on Muslims and Islam has been published in Scotland.

A series of recommendations have been produced by the Scottish Parliament’s Cross-Party Group (CPG) on Tackling Islamophobia in conjunction with Newcastle University and the National Union of Journalists.

In what is thought to be a world-first, the new guide will demonstrate leadership from Scotland to the rest of the UK and internationally, with the hope that it becomes a regularly used tool for reporters, sub-editors, broadcasters, columnists and other media professionals.
