Anas takes over as Public Audit committee convener

Labour MSP Anas Sarwar has taken over as convener of Holyrood’s public audit committee while Jenny Marra is on maternity leave.
Mr Sarwar is the first ethnic minority MSP to convene a Scottish Parliament committee since devolution.
In the role, he will focus on continued scrutiny of the performance of government, including health boards, as well as post-legislative scrutiny work – with the committee soon to report on Freedom of Information legislation.
Mr Sarwar has backed calls for proxy voting to be introduced at the Scottish Parliament, following measures already piloted at the Commons, to stop female MSPs being silenced while on maternity leave.

Labour MSP Anas Sarwar, interim convener of Holyrood’s public audit committee, said:
“Public bodies in Scotland are under intense financial pressure and there are a number of concerns about performance.
“Working with colleagues from all parties, I hope to use my time as interim convener to focus particularly on improving leadership and governance, including in health boards, and to hold those responsible for running public services to account.
“I am, however, only keeping the seat warm while Jenny is on maternity leave.
“The UK Parliament has already introduced proxy voting measures to ensure female politicians who are on maternity leave aren’t silenced, and I personally believe it’s time for the Scottish Parliament to catch up and follow suit.”
